Background history of Ueno Zoo

During World War 2 when much of Japan and Tokyo was being bombed it was decided by the Japanese Army to kill all the animals in the zoo because of fear if a bomb hit the zoo the animals may have been freed and could cause chaos in the streets of Tokyo. All the animals were poisoned except the Elephants which chose not to eat and thus starved to death.
